It’s 2035. Sleep Elite Enterprises (SEE) will insert a magnet in your head and—congratulations—you’re an “elite.” You can sleepwork. Crush your job, get sober, shed pounds, rake in the bucks—all while your brain gets eight glorious hours of rest. Being an elite is cool. A quarter of the world is on the program.

Bess is a disgraced tabloid reporter, freshly fired. She is offered a job at a splashier paper if she can get some dirt on SEE. She takes the bait … What follows involves a haunted house, a severed finger, a vat of acid, and yikes … a gunman on her tail.

Then there’s Mom—once a top scientist at SEE. Now she acts like a Stepford wife. Bess is baffled. Why would this accomplished woman go from making the world better … to making brownies and beds?

With humor, self-deprecation, and lots of sarcasm, Bess unravels both mysteries. In the end, she faces the fact that she—and only she—must determine the fate of the planet.
